Celebrity Festival Breakfast

A HUGE thank you to Kelly Santini for hosting another successful Celebrity Festival Breakfast.   NHL legend Bobby Smith was a hit with everyone – athletes, coaches, and guests – he spoke about highlights of his career as well as his long history of being involved with Special Olympics.  Bobby Smith was one of the first celebrities to hop on board many years ago as a floor hockey coach and has never left.  He kept the crowds entertained with colourful stories of his amazing career.  His genuine passion for Special Olympics shone through as he chatted and posed with all the athletes.  Events like this could not be possible without the strong partnership we have developed with Kelly Santini – without them Special Olympics Ottawa would not be as successful as it is!

The day didn’t end there – after the breakfast the Sprott School of Business presented Special Olympics Ottawa with a donation for almost $11,000.00!!  The business students from Carleton were given a challenge – they had 7 hours to come up with an innovative business  plan and execute it to raise as much money as possible for Special Olympics Ottawa – WOW!!!!  Thank You to all the students of the Sprott School of Business for your hard work and extremely generous donation!

Bell High School and Dr Frank Hayden

Special Olympics Day continued with an assembly at Bell High School in Nepean.  Dr. Frank Hayden captivated the students with a chat on the PAHL (Physical Activity Healthy Living) and the importance of a healthy lifestyle for everyone.  Christina Campbell amazed the students with her gymnastics performance – the students were all standing to watch her and were truly impressed with her level of expertise.  Danielle Robinson from the Senators Foundation was also on hand to present a cheque for $20,000.00 – a huge kick start to the PAHL Project.  The students at Bell HS lead by Julia Coe are thrilled to be bringing Special Olympics into their school, as well as their lives, and we look forward to a long partnership with the school.  Special thanks to Jacob Mathews and Rob McLellan from Perth for coming over and supporting the day! A spirited picture taking session ended the day!

Ottawa 67s

To complete a long and exciting day – the Ottawa 67’s declared their Friday night game “Special Olympics Night.”  The arena was packed as the 67s took on the Brampton Battalions.  Everyone won that night – the 67s 7-4 over Brampton, and our very own Ottawa Blades skating proudly to the cheers of a packed arena.  For those of us that waited backstage before the Blades performed it was so nice to see the 67s come off the ice and give all  our waiting  skaters a ‘High 5’!  Kyle Mayhew performed his solo flawlessly and then joined the rest of his team for a skate around the ice.

Saturday, June 6th, 2009On behalf of Special Olympics Ottawa Christina Campbell accepted a very generous donation from Councillor Rob Jellet. On Saturday June 6th the Councillor held a birthday bash at the Superstore in Orleans. The councillor focused his day on raising awareness for sport and Special Olympics. Special Olympics Ottawa was well represented with athletes from Rhythmic Gymnastics, Soccer, Track and Field and Basketball . It was a great day and an excellent opportunity to showcase the talents of our Ottawa Special Olympians.
